About Black Diamond Asphalt & Earth

Our Founder, Jonathan Metcalf, got his start in the paving business in 1978, working with his father under the company name Donald Metcalf Asphalt Paving, which was founded in 1963. The family company originally started off rolling lawns then transitioned to small driveways. When Jon became an owner in 1988, the company transitioned to Metcalf Paving Inc., based in Southbury. Jon grew the company over the years and became one of the few Connecticut State Asphalt Milling Contractors in 1992. Over the years, Jonathan has consistently focused on how to improve the quality of materials while keeping cost and environmental concerns in mind. With that, he was one of the first contractors in the State of Connecticut to introduce a recycled asphalt product into the market back in 1998. In keeping with this desire, the company rebranded in 2011 to Advanced Asphalt Recycling, LLC, which remains our corporate entity to this day. Black Diamond Asphalt & Earth is our street name and we have launched this website in an effort to bring greater ease and awareness to all the services we offer.

Our Commitment to Industry Experience

In addition to over 45 years of experience that our owner brings to your project, Jon is proud to have our Chief Superintendent, David Potter who has been with us since the 1980’s; our Operations Manager, David Lockhart, since the 1990’s; our Lead Foreman, Robert Suckley since the 1990’s; and Foreman Daniel Sanabria, who has been with us for the last decade. We also are grateful to our skilled laborers who have been through extensive training under our wings for the last decade. Recently, we welcomed Thomas Thurston to our team as our Sales Manager, who brings over 20 years of customer service relations and project management skills to your doorstep. We attend yearly trade shows and educational seminars as well as maintain OSHA certifications for our employees.

From initial project conception, to budgeting, and through implementation to completion, we pride ourselves on educating you about your project needs and providing options to work within your budget. We are mindful of your desired completion dates while maintaining safety at all times. We will always ensure as limited an amount of disturbance as possible throughout the project, developing a plan for interim parking and ingress and egress, thereby maintaining continual access.

Innovative Recycled and Green Initiatives

Since 1992, Jon was one of the first to bring awareness to the need for recycled materials in the asphalt industry. Since then, we have been on the cutting edge in providing environmentally friendly options for all types of projects. Our recycled asphalt machine is only 1 of 13 machines in North America!
